Persecuted Jews During Nazi Terror

How Jehovah’s Witnesses Came to Their Aid

Persecuted Jews During Nazi Terror

Until now largely unknown, Jehovah’s Witnesses repeatedly took a stand against the prevailing antisemitism in society during the National Socialist era — providing help to those persecuted as Jews.

After years of meticulous research, Christoph Wilker has gathered compelling evidence and now presents a number of deeply moving individual accounts, including that of young Berliner Dagobert Lewin, who found shelter with a Jehovah’s Witness family in 1942.

His research sheds light on a dimension of civil resistance that had previously “gone unnoticed,” as Prof. Dr. Detlef Garbe emphasized at the book launch in Hamburg on January 24, 2024. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Benz wrote: “This book brings together accounts by Jehovah’s Witnesses that — long overdue — cast a bright light on a largely unknown aspect of aid to Jews and their rescue.” (Quoted from the foreword to the book)

Inge Deutschkron was hidden by Franz Gumz, a Jehovah’s Witness, and his wife Emma. She was one of many who owed her survival to the Gumz family.
